Wedding disposable cameras: cardboard or app?

Disposable cameras on a wedding table
Disposable cameras on a wedding table

The little disposable camera on the tables has been part of weddings for generations. Here is what its digital version really changes.

You know the ritual: a cardboard disposable camera on every table, and the hope that your guests will capture the party. It is a brilliant idea, but in practice the cardboard version often falls short. The good news: you can keep its spirit and lose its flaws.

What’s great about the cardboard disposable

The constraint. A few shots per camera, no screen to check, a small flash: people take their time, aim, and get lively, imperfect photos. That is exactly what makes them charming, and it is a principle worth keeping (we talk about it in why 10 shots beat 300).

What really goes wrong

Three problems come up at every wedding:

1. Developing. You have to collect the cameras, take them to the lab, pay, wait a week, and find out that half the photos are ruined or lost.
2. The cost. A disposable camera costs €10 to €15 each. Across 15 tables, the bill climbs fast, prints included.
3. Forgotten cameras. Some leave in a handbag, others end up in the bin with the napkins.

“We put disposables on the tables. We got 4 cameras back out of 12, and only one film was usable.” Camille & Tom · 2026

The digital version: the charm, without the logistics

A digital disposable has the same spirit (a limited number of photos, a film look, a delayed reveal), but on the phone your guests already have in their hand. No camera to buy or collect, no lab, no lost photos: everything arrives in the same place. All you need is a QR code on the tables (see where to put the QR code).

A personalised wedding disposable camera

Personalised cardboard disposables do exist: a label with your names stuck on the box. It looks lovely, but you have to order in advance, pay more than for standard models, and developing is still the same headache. The digital version can be personalised from start to finish:

  • A poster with your names and date. The QR code your guests scan sits on a poster you personalise, ready to print for the tables or the entrance. The QR code poster generator does it in a few minutes.
  • Your wedding’s name in the camera. When a guest opens the camera, they see the name of your wedding: they know straight away where their photos are going.
  • The date printed on every photo. In the album, the “Disposable” film gives photos a warm, contrasty, grainy look, with the date stamped in the corner, just like prints from a real disposable. The look is kept in the downloaded photos.
  • The number of shots you choose. Between 3 and 15 photos per guest: fewer for a big wedding where every shot counts, more for a small gathering. You can still top them up along the way.

It is all explained on our wedding disposable camera page.

Cardboard has nostalgia on its side; digital guarantees that you actually get the memories back. If you are still torn between the different options, we compare them all in photo booth, mirror or disposable. With a wedding photo app like Time to Flash, you get the best of both: the constraint of film, without the fear of losing everything at the developing stage.

Frequently asked questions

Can you personalise a wedding disposable camera?

Yes. Cardboard disposables can be personalised with a label, ordered in advance. The digital version can be fully personalised: a QR code poster with your names and date, your wedding’s name in the camera, the number of shots per guest, and a “Disposable” film that stamps the date on every photo.

How many shots should each guest get with a disposable camera?

A cardboard disposable has 27 shots, shared by a whole table. With the digital version, each guest has their own shots: between 5 and 15 is ideal, enough to cover the day, few enough for every photo to count.

How much does a disposable camera for a wedding cost?

A cardboard disposable costs €10 to €15 each, plus developing. In the digital version, Time to Flash is free for up to 5 participants, then a one-off payment for the whole wedding: for example €29.99 for up to 100 participants, with no subscription.
