Making a photo book with your guests’ photos

How to turn 300 phone photos into an album you actually take out and look at, without spending the summer on it.
The photographer’s album tells the story of the official day. A book made with your guests’ photos tells something else: the party seen from the inside. The two complement each other very well, and the second costs ten times less.
Why it works so well
Guests’ photos have a messiness, a spontaneity and points of view that a professional photo story doesn’t: the back table, behind the scenes, glances between friends. Put together, they tell a livelier story. And as they often share the same analogue look, the whole thing stays consistent (see why the film look is so beautiful).
Step 1: The selection (1 hour)
Go through the album just once, quickly, and only keep what moves you. Out of 300 photos, you should end up with 60 to 80. Don’t go over it three times: your first instinct is the right one. The full method is here: what to do with 300 photos the next day.
Step 2: The right format
Aim for 40 to 60 pages, no more. That is the size you actually take out and look at. A 120-page book impresses on the first day, then stays in the cupboard.
Two simple rules: one photo per page for the strongest ones, and no more than four on the “atmosphere” pages. Leave white space. A page crammed with nine thumbnails never gets looked at.
Step 3: The order
The simplest is best: the chronological order of the day, from getting ready to the end of the night. You can open with a title page with your first names and the date, and close with the very last photo of the night. No need for chapters or long texts: two or three handwritten captions are enough.
Step 4: Printing
Allow €50 to €150 for a decent-quality book, compared with €300 to €800 through your photographer. Three things to check before ordering:
1. Resolution. The photos need to be in good resolution, not taken from a messaging app that compressed them. That is THE reason an album made from WhatsApp photos is often disappointing (see the comparison of sharing solutions).
2. Binding. A lay-flat binding, which opens completely, makes all the difference for photos spread across two pages.
3. Paper. A thick matte paper brings out the analogue grain much better than gloss.

The three mistakes to avoid
Waiting until you have the time. Set yourself a date, one month after the wedding. After six months, it will never happen.
Wanting to include everything. A book is a selection, not an archive. The rest lives very happily in digital form.
Working from compressed files. Always download the original album, in full quality.
The best-value gift of the wedding
Make two or three copies: one for the two of you, one for each family. An €80 book that tells the story of the party through the guests’ eyes makes far more of an impression than a classic gift, and people still look at it twenty years later.
With Time to Flash, you download the whole album as one file: all that is left is to choose.
