Free wedding photo apps: what is really free

The three business models behind the word “free”, and the five questions to ask before trusting anyone with your memories.

“Free” is the most searched word when people look for a photo solution for their wedding. That is understandable: the budget is already tight. But behind that word hide three very different models, and only one of them truly comes with no strings attached. (For the full picture, paid options included, see our comparison of wedding photo apps.)

The three models behind the word “free”

1. Limited free (freemium). You create the event without paying, everything goes well… then you discover, when it is time to download, that the album is locked after 30 photos, or that the full download costs money. It is the most common model, and the most unpleasant: you find the bill the day after the wedding, when you have no choice left.

2. Free, but funded some other way. No payment, but your photos are used for something: advertising, analysis, or storage on servers you know little about. The terms of use are worth reading.

3. Honest free, but limited. A genuinely complete offer, with no catch, but limited to a small number of guests. It is a real trial, designed so you can test before you pay.

The 5 questions to ask before you start

1. Is downloading the whole album included? This is trap number one. If the answer isn’t clear, move on.
2. Are the photos in their original quality? Many free services compress. You won’t care on a screen, but you’ll regret it when you print.
3. How long are the photos kept? Some albums expire after 30 days.
4. Is there a limit on the number of guests or photos? And what happens when it is reached, in the middle of the party?
5. Where are the photos hosted? For a wedding, with children and loved ones in the pictures, it is not a detail (see image rights: what the law says).

The test to do, one week before

Create your event, scan the QR code with your own phone, take three photos, and go all the way through the download. If you can get your three photos back in full quality without being asked for your card, the offer is honest. If not, you have just avoided a very nasty surprise.

What we do on our side

With our wedding photo app, it is free for up to 5 guests, with no card needed: enough to test the whole process, from the QR code to the download. Beyond that, it is a one-off payment depending on the number of guests: no subscription, no fees when you collect your photos. The servers are in Europe.

The good news: even the paid offer stays far below the price of a photo booth. So the real issue isn’t the price, it is not getting stuck the day after.
